I thought this my generate some interesting responses. I was listening to the new Dixie Chicks CD to see if there was anything worth adding to Americana Homeplace Radio. In light of the early buzz that the CD had more of a country-rock sound, I was kinda looking forward to it. I was a little disappointed, however, as the CD doesn't really sound that far removed from their earlier mainstream country CDs.
Anyway, the bigger question is whether the Dixie Chicks are "Americana" at all. Given that there is no uniform definition of Americana, there isn't really a right or wrong answer.
I was prepared to argue that the Dixie Chicks are Americana. Their last release, Home, was a largely acoustic recording which was heavily influenced by the growth of Americana following the success of the O Brother soundtrack. Given their subsequent alienation from - and rejection of - the country-music establihsment, combined with the addition of producer Rick Rubin, I thought the new CD would be along the lines of Allison Moorer's "The Duel." I was expecting a dark, brooding, rock-oriented release. But that's not really the case at all.
So, for now, I say "No" to the Americana label.
